Summer Activity #1

Hi there!  Happy Tuesday!  I have activity #1 ready for you today!  Yay!  We started our day by going to the library.  Alyson was so excited to check out some ocean themed books.  We were there when they opened!

We came home, looked a bit at the books and then I got our materials ready.  This one is actually an activity that I used to do with my first graders when I only had 20 kiddos.  They love it!  We are making a submarine porthole.  Here is what you will need.

Supplies:
2 paper plates
Glue
Goldfish Crackers
clear sheet (like a transparency sheet, or even plastic wrap)
Markers, Crayons
Stapler
Ribbon/yarn
Printable (provided by me)
Scraps of construction paper
Photo of your child/children

Okay, so here we go.  With your 2 paper plates, make one the bottom (the ocean) and one the top (the porthole).  I happen to have some blue plates on hand.  BUT, I normally don't, so I would use 2 white plates and have them color the water with crayon.  You could also just cut a piece of blue construction paper and cover the ocean piece.

The top (porthole) will only be colored on the top.  Don't color the inside, this will be cut out.  I suggest coloring before cutting.  Alyson was obviously into this because of how close her face was - ha!
I made the initial cut in the middle of the plate and Alyson cut the rest.  I then handed her the printable sheet of clip art and she cut and glued the pieces.  She added some yellow for sand.  And she added roots to the seaweed like we had just seen in the books we looked at.
I grabbed a photo of her (this one is from an extra Christmas card I had).  We just glued her onto the clip art.  Alsyon placed her in the ocean.
This is where your Goldfish come in.  Just add them to the paper plate.  I let Alyson decide where to put them.
She was happy with this.  So we added the "glass" next.  Now I used a laminated piece of "paper" for mine.  You can certainly leave this step out, but it keeps the bugs out (I know from experience).  You could use anything clear.
Before trimming, I stapled all the pieces together.
Here it is all finished.  It is really cute.  And for those little ones you may have, you can relate this to "The Rainbow Fish" book.
And just a weird fact.  I have a teacher made one of these at school and those Goldfish will eventually disappear.  So odd.

I hope you liked this one.  I have something planned for today, but grandma is over so I am not sure if we will get to it before swim.  Because did I mention?  We have night swim class.
Be sure to download the clip art sheet.
